Task Analysis (TA)

What is task analysis?

A Task Analysis (TA) systematically breaks down complex activities or processes into smaller, manageable tasks to understand how users perform them. By examining the steps, goals, and interactions, the analysis provides designers with valuable insights into user decision-making and workflow.

At HFDC, we use a modified Cognition Perception Action (PCA) TA to identify use errors and challenges effectively.

Why do I need it?

TA is critical to the design process as it provides an understanding of the user perceptual, attentional, and informational needs for UI components that are involved in completing a task and potential use errors. By dissecting tasks into manageable steps, designers can identify pain points, inefficiencies, and user needs. Serves as a foundation for designing UI, instruction manuals and IFUs, determining personnel requirements, training, and scenarios for evaluation of the system. This insight informs the creation of streamlined, intuitive designs that align closely with user behaviors and goals.
